Does John 1 Teach the Trinity?
Two renowned theologians go head-to-head in a rigorous, respectful debate on one of the most discussed passages in Scripture—**John 1:1–18**.
📖 **Thesis:** *"John 1 is not Trinitarian."*
📖 **Debate Format**
* Opening Statements (30 min each)
* Rebuttals (10 min each)
* Cross-Examination (15 min each)
* Audience Q&A (15 min)
* Closing Statements (5 min each)
**Highlights:**
* Historical development of Trinitarian doctrine
* The Greek grammar of *John 1:1* ("In the beginning was the Word…")
* The meaning of "the Word was God"
* Can the Bible teach the Trinity without the word "Trinity"?
* Is the Word an eternal divine person, or God's own wisdom personified?
Taking the **affirmative**, **Dr. Dale Tuggy** (Unitarian Christian Alliance) argues that John's prologue should be read through a first-century lens, without importing later Trinitarian concepts.
Taking the **negative**, **Dr. James White** (Alpha & Omega Ministries) contends that the Greek text itself affirms the eternal deity of Christ and that the doctrine of the Trinity is rooted in Scripture, not post-biblical development.
Dr. White defends the classical Trinitarian understanding that "the Word was God," while Dr. Tuggy argues from a Unitarian perspective that *John 1* does not teach a tri-personal God. Together, they explore Greek grammar, early church history, philosophy of time, and biblical theology — offering deep insights into how Christians have read this passage for centuries.
💬 **Moderator:** Jeremiah Nortier (*The Apologetic Dog*)

Purgatory Debate - 2/17/2024
In February of 2024 James White and Trent Horn did two, back to back debates at First Lutheran Church in Houston. The first night was on sola scriptura, and the second on purgatory. It was the conjunction of these two debates that was most informative and useful. We invite our viewers to listen to both debates and compare the assertions concerning the "deposit of faith" and "apostolic tradition" in the first with the argumentation in defense of purgatory in the second. It is very enlightening!

The issue of the nature of God is the dividing line that separates Mormonism from Biblical Christianity. Mormon apologists over the past few decades have begun appealing to the early church fathers and the doctrine of 'theosis,' asserting that if we acknowledge the Christian standing of these early Christians, then we should not question the claim that Mormons are Christians as well. But is this a fair use of the early Fathers? James White debates LDS apologist and FARMS contributor Martin Tanner at the University of Utah on this key subject.

Taped on Long Island in August of 1996, James White debates Gerry Matatics on the subject of the Marian Dogmas: Immaculate Conception, Perpetual Virginity, Bodily Assumption, Queenly Coronation of Mary, and Mary as Co-Redemptrix. Are these dogmas about Mary true as the church in Rome claims, or what Protestants say about Mary is true: she was uniquely chosen by God to bear the Messiah and raised Him up like any normal mother, that she had marital relations with her husband, Joseph, and that she was a sinner like all of mankind? A fast-paced debate that is quite the primer if one is studying the Marian dogmas.

This is the famous/infamous 'Pay now, pay later' debate, so named for Dr. Stravinskas' response to a question regarding a passage from Tobit. This debate quickly drifts off of Purgatory to the underlying issue of authority and Rome's claim to it. A very eye-opening dialogue highlighting the difference between the biblical gospel and Rome's gospel of self-righteousness.

The world considers Dr. Crossan and The Jesus Seminar to be cutting-edge scholarship. This was a battle of presuppositions. One's presuppositions determine how the Biblical text is to be interpreted and handled. Is the Bible's account of the life of Jesus historical and accurate? Is God presently active in the world? Has the Gospel message changed? Does it need to be changed for today? Did the Incarnation, Crucifixion, and Resurrection of Jesus happen, or are they just parables to present a Jesus as a figure to emulate? These questions and many others are answered during a lengthy cross examination period.

Can someone be gay and be a christian? James White debates Barry Lynn. Not only is Lynn the Executive Director of American's United for the Separation of Church and State he is also an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ.
The cross examination in this debate is worth listening all by itself. James confronts Lynn's low view of scripture only to find out that Lynn didn't even bother to bring a bible with him. It isn't long before Lynn begins getting agitated and even calls the Apostle Paul 'over the top.'
Disclaimer:
The opening remarks portion of this debate, (the first hour), was over modulated as it was recorded, causing distortion. We have done everything we can to clean it up. While the sound during this portion is irritating, it remains audible.
Given the obvious importance of the subject matter of the debate and that the balance of the debate (almost 2 hours) is just fine, we felt that making it available was absolutely necessary. We apologize for the inconvenience.

Does the Bible teach the Trinity? James. White explains how the Bible has always taught monotheism, while simultaneously teaching that the persons of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are God. The Father is not the Son, the Son is not the Spirit, and the Spirit is not the Father. Yet, the same name, Yahweh, is applied to the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. Moreover, each of the persons is equal in Scripture. Thus, the Bible teaches the Trinity.

Is It Possible for a Non-Christian to Enter into Heaven?
This is the 10th debate in the Great Debate series covering the topic of whether or not a non-Christian can enter Heaven. In this debate, Dr. White takes the negative whereas Bill Rutland takes the positive side. This is certainly one of the more gentlemanly debates with both sides behaving in a cordial manner towards one another. The focus of the debate are two sections of the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, namely, sections 841 and 1260. Both sections describe how non-Christians may enter Heaven. To be honest, Mr. Rutland has an indefensible issue because he had to prove that these sections in the Roman Catholic catechism are, in fact, apostolic teaching. You will note an almost universal salvation theme crop up in the debate, and the notion that there will be those who are saved outside of Christ. This debate exposes another error in Rome's soteriology-in addition to her errors regarding justification, sanctification, purgatory, and the concept of the free will of man, sections 841 and 1260 also present a sort of 'back door' into Heaven. It is also interesting to note that Mr. Rutland repeatedly tried to bring up those who die in infancy and those who are mentally incapacitated as a defense of sections 841 and 1260. However, those subjects are described in section 1261 of the Roman Catholic catechism.

Radio Debate: Is Mormonism Christian?
The debate begins between James White and LDS apologist Van Hale. Is Mormonism a Christian Religion? Or is it a counterfeit disguised to look like the one true Faith?

Dr. Fastigi attempts to defend Indulgences, while James refutes the very notion. The debate is very much back and forth until Fastigi attempts to read into the Westminster Confession the Roman idea of expiation of sins. It is at this point where the balance of the debate shifts and Fastigi's Catholic presuppositions are not just hinted at but clearly revealed.

Veneration of Saints & Images Part 2
This debate, which took place in 2002 on Long Island, NY, focuses on the subject of prayer to and veneration of saints and images that represent them. Its participants are Patrick Madrid, a Roman Catholic apologist and editor of Envoy Magazine, and Dr. James White. Madrid defends the proclamation that veneration of saints and images is consistent with the Bible and Christian tradition, asserting that, as saints are fellow members of the body of Christ, they therefore are able to receive prayers from believers and intercede on the behalf of their brothers and sisters. Further, he asserts that icons and images help call for us to imitate the saints and act as memorials of honor to them. Dr. White, who denies that proclamation, demonstrates the fallacy of this position by revealing the false dichotomy created by Roman Catholicism on the terms latria and dulia, demonstrates from Scripture that prayer is an act of worship designated for God alone. This debate helps clarify the issue between Roman Catholics and Protestants on what constitutes veneration and is veneration appropriate at any time to anything other than God. It also helps us to understand the role our deceased brethren in the faith is not intercessory and that prayer belongs to God alone.

Is Mary the intercessor between Jesus and men by virtue of being the 'Mother of God,' or simply another sinner saved by grace? James White debates Robert Fastigi a scholar and professor of theology at St. Edward's University, a Catholic University. How should we view Mary? As the intercessor between Jesus and men by virtue of being the Mother of God, or as simply another sinner saved by grace who had the privilege of carrying the incarnate God/Man Jesus Christ who is our only mediator and intercessor? Once again, the difference hinges on where one looks for authority: God's Word alone as infallible and sufficient, or to fallible men sitting on self-made Papal thrones.

The 'Read My Book' Debate on BAM
This informal debate took place on December 16th 2003 on the Bible Answerman Broadcast. James White faces off against Hank Hanegraaff (The Bible Answerman) and George Bryson (Calvary Chapel).
Confronted with numerous bible passages against his philosophical position George Bryson avoids interacting with the passages and simply repeats conundrums while making a number of his own dogmatic assertions. At one point Hank even states the charge of avoidance directly to him while stating that James had repeatedly exegeted them with no response. This debate is filled with the very things that Hank decries: dogmatic assertions, philosophical constructs and broad sweeping generalities. James White is the only one who repeatedly works toward appealing to and rightly dividing the scripture. It is a perfect example of how modern defenders of Libertarian Free Will run away from scripture to the arms of philosophical conundrum in order to defend their positions.
Dr. White did a follow up DL to this show. Follow the link below to listen.

While this is definitely an interesting exchange, it is not a very good debate. The topic was supposed to involve both sides presenting a positive exegesis of Romans 9 so that the audience could compare and decide for themselves. Professor Flowers chose to make a presentation on Total Depravity (which was the topic he had originally suggested), and then make some surface-level comments about how his position would be relevant to particular sections of Romans 9. Hence, the formal debate was basically uncontested, but the secondary debate (total depravity) was only partially contested, as James did not get to make a positive presentation on the topic. Despite this (all too common) problem, the discussion is very useful in comparing Reformed theology and exegesis with what calls itself “traditionalist” Southern Baptist views.

Infant Baptism vs Believer's Baptism
Do the scriptures teach us to baptize our children? Or do they teach us to lead people to Christ and to baptize them after repentance and faith? Are we to view our children as members of the covenant? Is baptism meant to replace circumcision in the new covenant? What about those verses in scripture where everyone in the house was baptized? Wouldn't that include the children? These questions and more illustrate the long standing debate over infant vs credo baptism. On March 23rd 2015 James White and Gregg Strawbridge debated it at The Orlando Grace Church in Orlando Florida.

James White debates Gerry Matatics in their best debate yet. What is the ultimate authority for the Christian? Is Rome right when she says that Scripture and Tradition as interpreted by an infallible Magisterium are the infallible rules of faith and practice of the Church? Or, was the Protestant Reformation correct in saying that the Bible alone is the sole infallible rule of faith and practice of the Church and that she must be subservient to its teachings?

Defending Letters to a Mormon Elder in SLC
James defends his book Letters to a Mormon Elder on live talk radio in Salt Lake City. James takes on mormon apologists Martin Tanner, BYU professors Daniel C. Peterson and William Hamblin. This is a lively debate that covers the topics of the sufficiency of Scripture, canon issues, the veracity of the Book of Mormon, the false prophecy of Joseph Smith, faith, apologetics, and proving the existence of God. This was a call-in program and the callers asked good questions. This debate clearly revealed that the starting point of mormon apologetics is man, not God. Many of the arguments used by the mormons were the same as those employed by atheists who argue against the Bible.
