60 debates ยท Catholicism
In February of 2024 James White and Trent Horn did two, back to back debates at First Lutheran Church in Houston. The first night was on sola scriptura, and the second on purgatory. It was the conjunction of these two debates that was most informative and useful. We invite our viewers to listen to both debates and compare the assertions concerning the "deposit of faith" and "apostolic tradition" in the first with the argumentation in defense of purgatory in the second. It is very enlightening!

Do the Catholic Church's Teachings on Mary Constitute Authentic Christian Doctrine? James White debates Peter D. Williams at the London Oratory in St. Wilfrid's Hall.
In the first public, moderated debate between Alpha and Omega Ministries and Catholic Answers in over twenty years (excluding radio encounters), Catholic Answers Staff Apologist Trent Horn debates the Director of Alpha and Omega Ministries, James White, on the question of whether a true Christian can lose their salvation. Going directly to the heart of the gospel itself, this debate will raise many issues relating to the issues surrounding God's sovereignty, grace, and man's sinfulness.
Is it necessary to have the sins purged of those who are in Christ Jesus before they can go to heaven? This is the famous/infamous 'Pay now, pay later' debate, so named for Dr. Stravinskas' response to a question regarding a passage from Tobit. This debate quickly drifts off of Purgatory to the underlying issue of authority and Rome's claim to it. A very eye-opening dialogue highlighting the difference between the biblical gospel and Rome's gospel of self-righteousness.
Taped on Long Island in August of 1996, James White debates Gerry Matatics on the subject of the Marian Dogmas: Immaculate Conception, Perpetual Virginity, Bodily Assumption, Queenly Coronation of Mary, and Mary as Co-Redemptrix. Are these dogmas about Mary true as the church in Rome claims, or what Protestants say about Mary is true: she was uniquely chosen by God to bear the Messiah and raised Him up like any normal mother, that she had marital relations with her husband, Joseph, and that she was a sinner like all of mankind? A fast-paced debate that is quite the primer if one is studying the Marian dogmas.

This is the 10th debate in the Great Debate series covering the topic of whether or not a non-Christian can enter Heaven. In this debate, Dr. White takes the negative whereas Bill Rutland takes the positive side. This is certainly one of the more gentlemanly debates with both sides behaving in a cordial manner towards one another. The focus of the debate are two sections of the Catechism of the Roman Catholic Church, namely, sections 841 and 1260. Both sections describe how non-Christians may enter Heaven. To be honest, Mr. Rutland has an indefensible issue because he had to prove that these sections in the Roman Catholic catechism are, in fact, apostolic teaching. You will note an almost universal salvation theme crop up in the debate, and the notion that there will be those who are saved outside of Christ. This debate exposes another error in Rome's soteriology-in addition to her errors regarding justification, sanctification, purgatory, and the concept of the free will of man, sections 841 and 1260 also present a sort of 'back door' into Heaven. It is also interesting to note that Mr. Rutland repeatedly tried to bring up those who die in infancy and those who are mentally incapacitated as a defense of sections 841 and 1260. However, those subjects are described in section 1261 of the Roman Catholic catechism.
Does Trinitarian baptism join you to the New Covenant? Does it join you to Christ? Does it make you a brother or sister in Christ with everyone else who has likewise been baptized, even if you hold to a false gospel? Are Roman Catholics our brothers and sisters in Christ by baptism, but not by confession of faith? These are the issues debated by Douglas Wilson of Christ Church, Moscow, Idaho and James White of Alpha and Omega Ministries.
A very interesting debate where both sides make strong cases, until one examines the other. Michuta makes a strong opening statement, however it is refuted by Dr. White during rebuttal. For the rest of the debate Michuta makes no attempt to deal with Dr. White's countering evidence, and simply gives responses grounded in accusations of misunderstanding and deliberate mischaracterization. This is less a debate about what is scripture and more about why the Deuterocanonical Books are indeed apocryphal.
Taped on Long Island in May of 1999, James White debates Roman Catholic Apologist Robert Sungenis on the biblical and historical merits of the Mass. This debate deals with vital topics like: โข What is the history of the Mass? โข What about transubstantiation? โข Why is the Mass called a sacrifice? โข Can a priest โre-presentโ Christ on the altar? โข How did the early church view the โEucharistโ? Was the sacrifice of Christ a โonce for allโ event or is it to be repeated over and over as in the Roman Mass?
Previously titled 'The Lost Debate' because Catholic Answers claimed that they had lost the tapes. They were able to find the first half of the debate but somehow, still lost the other half. This is the same debate where Dr. Sippo left the room during Dr. White's presentation to go get a Coke. Just as in his articles, E-mails, and web postings, it seems that Dr. Sippo cannot resist misrepresenting 'Prot'estant doctrines, or calling those with whom he disagrees apostates.
Is the Roman Catholic Church correct when she says that we can merit justification? Was the Council of Trent right after all? Can we lose our justification? Or is the Protestant Reformation correct in saying that a man is justified by faith alone, apart from works? Is Christ's imputed righteousness enough to allow us to stand before a Holy God, or must we go through satispassio in Purgatory?
James White debates Jesuit scholar Dr. Mitchell Pacwa. An in depth, accurate, very helpful debate on the meaning and significance of Justification. A must for anyone struggling with this issue.
Does Matthew 16:13-19 teach that Peter was the first Pope? James White and Gerry Matatics debate the primacy of Peter
Vinney Lewis is a Feeneyite and the most radical of the Roman apologists. Be prepared for some strange arguments!
The single most lively and revealing debate on Sola Scriptura yet.
One of the most useful and helpful debates on the topic of Sola Scriptura. Dr. White and Dr. Pacwa lay out the issues very clearly without the debate devolving into a battle of personalities. A prime example how timed, moderated debate should be done. Recorded in December, 1999 in El Cajon, CA
James White and Robert Sungenis debate the Roman Mass in, of all places, Salt Lake City Utah. Robert Sungenis claims that James embarrassed himself in this debate. Listen for yourself and find out the real story.
Sola Fide? Does Biblical Salvation come by Faith Alone? Or are there external things that contribute to the process?
James White debates Jesuit scholar Mitchell Pacwa, this debate shows how very important the atonement is to this discussion.
James White and Fr. Mitchell Pacwa debate the validity of the Roman Priesthood.
James White and Gerry Matatics debate the question 'Did Mary Have Other Children?' on October 4, 2003 at the University of Utah. The fireworks start right off as James pre-emptorily refutes arguments often used by Mr. Matatics, leaving him with little to do other than challenging James to take some bizarre angelic oath of honesty.
James White vs former Catholic Answers Vice President Patrick Madrid. This is the debate that prompted one of the most outrageous articles in the history of This Rock magazine.
Catholic Answers called this a Slam Dunk for their side! See for yourself if Catholic Answers has a case. James White vs James Akin with Hank Hannegraf
James White debates Roman Catholic Apologist Gerry Matatics This the second of two debates held in Denver, Colorado during the Papal visit in 1993. Does the New Testament allow for an office of Pope? Was there a Papacy in the Early Church? Was Peter the first Pope? Does Peter have a line of successors? Is the Pope truly the Head of the Church, the Vicar of Christ on Earth, and the leader of all Christians? These are crucial questions that must be answered. This is the set you need to give to anyone who is considering the Papacy as a biblical belief.

An eye opening debate demonstrating the clear difference in accepted authority between the Romanist and the Christian. Listen for yourself and determine who is truly consistent with the facts laid out both in Scripture and in history. This debate was the direct result of one with Tim Staples that occurred earlier in the year.
James White shows Papal Infallibility to be nothing more than a convenient invention of Rome in this debate. He clearly demonstrates that Roman arguments for Infallibility can't stand up to the test of history. Listen as an expert dismantles the Roman arguments piece by piece leaving his opponent with nothing more than empty rhetoric. Once again a predominantly Roman Catholic crowd found it hard to control themselves as James demonstrated the futility of a major Roman doctrine.
Dr. Fastigi attempts to defend Indulgences, while James refutes the very notion. The debate is very much back and forth until Fastigi attempts to read into the Westminster Confession the Roman idea of expiation of sins. It is at this point where the balance of the debate shifts and Fastigi's Catholic presuppositions are not just hinted at but clearly revealed.
Is Mary the intercessor between Jesus and men by virtue of being the 'Mother of God,' or simply another sinner saved by grace? James White debates Robert Fastigi a scholar and professor of theology at St. Edward's University, a Catholic University. How should we view Mary? As the intercessor between Jesus and men by virtue of being the Mother of God, or as simply another sinner saved by grace who had the privilege of carrying the incarnate God/Man Jesus Christ who is our only mediator and intercessor? Once again, the difference hinges on where one looks for authority: God's Word alone as infallible and sufficient, or to fallible men sitting on self-made Papal thrones.
This debate, which took place in 2002 on Long Island, NY, focuses on the subject of prayer to and veneration of saints and images that represent them. Its participants are Patrick Madrid, a Roman Catholic apologist and editor of Envoy Magazine, and Dr. James White. Madrid defends the proclamation that veneration of saints and images is consistent with the Bible and Christian tradition, asserting that, as saints are fellow members of the body of Christ, they therefore are able to receive prayers from believers and intercede on the behalf of their brothers and sisters. Further, he asserts that icons and images help call for us to imitate the saints and act as memorials of honor to them. Dr. White, who denies that proclamation, demonstrates the fallacy of this position by revealing the false dichotomy created by Roman Catholicism on the terms latria and dulia, demonstrates from Scripture that prayer is an act of worship designated for God alone. This debate helps clarify the issue between Roman Catholics and Protestants on what constitutes veneration and is veneration appropriate at any time to anything other than God. It also helps us to understand the role our deceased brethren in the faith is not intercessory and that prayer belongs to God alone.

James White debates Robert Fastigi a scholar and professor of theology at St. Edward's University, a Catholic University. A helpful dialogue which shows the difference in the Bible's witness of justification by faith alone and Rome's system of possible justification by faith and works.
Is the Roman Pope Infallible? James White debates Robert Fastigi a scholar and professor of theology at St. Edward's University, a Catholic University.
